Chrysler-Jeep Fails to Recall Grand Cherokee Dangerous Seat Defect
I recently posted a message on Chrysler's Facebook page expressing my surprise that a defect such as this didn't warrant a recall. To Chrysler's credit, their Facebook representative contacted me within minutes saying that she would forward my issue to Chrysler's corporate office. A man named Michael contacted me and said that if I took my Jeep into the local dealership and they found the seat bracket to be defective, Chrysler would help me out with repairs.
Michael made sure to state that if my seat bracket wasn't found to be defective I would be responsible for the $90.00 service fee and whatever repairs were performed. Not once did he ask or say that if I tried to fix my seat, any responsibility on their part would be null and void. Before I had contact with Chrysler, I had tried to wire the seat to the floor bracket (a little Southern engineering) to keep the drivers seat from falling into the back seat where my daughter sits. If Michael or the dealership service guy would have asked me as to whether the seat had been worked on, I would have gladly volunteered that information and avoided the $90.00 service fee.
I have done a lot of research to see how widespread this defect is and I was overwhelmed by the number of complaints that are out there on the web. There is even a website (besides mine) dedicated to the Chrysler seat defect because the problem is so widespread. Another problem with Jeep Grand Cherokee seats is that they can catch on fire. Chrysler did recall the Jeeps with this defect, but have refused to recall an equally dangerous defect with the seat bracket.
I will post all the information that I can find in regards to the seat bracket defects so you will have overwhelming evidence to present to Chrysler in case you try to hold them responsible for repairs. When they know you have this information they might be more likely to help you. Just make sure you don't try to make a temporary repair to your seat because they will just kick you to the curb.
The 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee seat track has a weak point on the rear scissor assembly. When you start to notice a wobble or click it means one of the tiny connecting pieces has broken. Eventually the other side will also break allowing you to lift the entire seat up. Here are some pictures showing this break.

UPDATE: Chrysler is refusing an NHTSA request to recall 2.7 million Jeep SUVs for a fire risk. I have been a big fan of Jeeps over the years, but I'm beginning to think they don't care about their customers safety. The seat bracket issue is potentially dangerous and the fire risk with the Grand Cherokee's is potentially dangerous, but Chrysler/Jeep doesn't seem to care. I guess it's all about the money to the Chrysler people. I'm sad to say I may never buy another Chrysler product ever again......

The driver side front seat track on this vehicle have failed
5 times since 2004. The first track was repaired twice. Finally in 2008 I
purchased a brand new track for over $500 at park jeep in burnsville,
mn. That one lasted 3 years and failed and it was repaired once. 6 months ago
it final failed again and my driver seat became a rocking chair for the 5th
time. I replaced that one with a used one I found and am just waiting for that
one to come apart.

While driving, the drivers seat had something break
underneath it causing the seat to become more of a rocking chair, wobbling back
and forth and to the side. My 19 year old son was driving at the time, and
thank goodness he was preparing to stop at a stop sign and he almost was thrown
backwards. Now this vehicle is undriveable. Have called around to jeep dealers
and found out that it is the power seat adjuster which needs replacing. Mopar
has discontinued this part and it is not available. I have seen on other
complaints the same thing has happened to many others. We need some kind of
satisfaction on this obviously unsafe part.

The drivers seat frame has broken from regular use.
Apparently the steel used is not the correct strength for the normal use of the
seat. Repairs will further weaken the structural integrity of the seat.
Manufacturer claims it is not covered under warranted.

On a recent day-long trip, the electric seat heater on
driver's side overheated, causing a 4" diameter badly blistered burn on
the back of my leg. A recall for this defect was issued on 4/7/2009 for 2001-2004 models (NHTSA campaign
number: 09v117000 ), but I was not able to find one for the 1999 grand cherokee
limited. The local dealer (lithia in grants pass,
or) requested I submit this so he can make the proper repairs free of charge as
specified for the 2001-2004 models.

No event triggered my seat failure, the seat track (frame)
broke and the seat is behaving like a rocking chair. It hurts my back to drive
and is very unsafe. This is my driver's front seat that is broken. I did
nothing to cause it to break. I cannot find another seat anywhere without having
to order a new one through the dealer, which I've been quoted up to $1,500.
This is outrageous, a seat breaking in normal driving conditions at 70,000
miles, and I'm the original owner and drive normally, and have had no accidents
impacting my seat that broke abruptly. It's a power seat, laredo
model, code fll5. This is a seriously defective and unsafe product, and I will
never buy another jeep again.

Two complaints-(1) at approximately 120,000 miles the
driver's front seat bracket broke and began leaning the seat backwards. After
another 8,000 miles the bracket completely broke. It was welded by a
professional welder and replaced. At approximately 138,000 miles it broke again
and will have to be welded again but I cannot afford to pay to have it fixed
right now. I researched and found that this is a very, very common complaint
and safety issue on my model-99 jeep grand cherokee. (2) at approximately
142,000 miles the air bag light began coming on and going off intermittently
and now it does so frequently, especially when turning. I have been advised by
a mechanic friend that it is the clockspring wires in the steering column and
hat only a dealer can fix it. Like the seat problem, this is a safety issue and
from my research I have found that it is a very, very common issue as well. I
cannot afford to have a dealer replace the clockspring as I have been quoted
upwards of $300 to do so.

broken as well. I've owned many cars in my life, and I've never had a broken
seat. I should be a recall on the 1999 jeeps. It's up there with having a
working air bag. No one should have to pay to have their driver seat fix, when
that should be one thing they shouldn't have to worry about. It's happening to

I currently own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. Over the last
year I noticed a squeaking noise coming from driver's side seat. The noise

popped off of the power seat track. My seat flipped back and rested on the rear

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee has just had it's third failure
of the driver's seat frame. The first time that the seat frame broke back in
2002 it was covered under Warranty with chrysler. Chrysler replaced the seat
frame with a new seat frame. It broke again in 2006. This time I had it welded
and it lasted until april 2010 when it broke again! each time that this has
happened I was driving the car, while accelerating, and it snapped and threw me
backwards in the seat towards the rear seat area. Thankfully, I was able to control
the car each time and then placed temporary supports around the seat until I
could have the repair completed. I am planning to have the frame welded again
this time. I am sorry that I did not report this before now. I am a very
experienced driver and I am afraid to allow my young drivers in the household
to drive this jeep any longer. I am the only one to drive it.

The seat bracket on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee broke while
I was driving causing the seat to "float" and move up and down on
that corner. I pulled over and looked under the seat to find a break on a piece
of flat steel that is used to raise the seat up and down with the electric
motors. There was no crash or other outside influence causing the seat to
break. It is unsafe to drive because the driver is not secure while making
turns. I think it is very dangerous if I was to be in a crash! the metal seems
very thin on these areas where the electric seat adjust has to "scissor
lift" up and down. I drive a lot across two states to pick up my children
- so I had someone weld the seat bracket back together. It held for about 3
months and now it is broke again. If the seat brackets are this weak, how will
it hold together in a crash??? please help me and others. I have heard of one
other person with a similar problem on a 2000 jeep cherokee (not
"grand").

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee front driver's seat has broken
in two spots. Front left weld and rear right weld. I am extremely fortunate
that the "break" of the weld did not happen while I was driving at a
"normal rate of speed", if it did, a severe and tragic accident could
have occurred. The main reason I am writing to you is the fact, during my
research for a "fix" or replacement seat, I stumbled across a few
websites with consumers, like myself, inquiring why this happened. We are not
talking about a handful, we are talking over a thousand entries of the same
issue happening to other consumers. And this is more than likely the tip of the
ice berg since many, many folks would never post to a blog or even use the
internet as a platform for complaint. Jeep chrysler should be responsible for
their poor quality. What will it take for the powers to be to do the right
thing by the consumer. Accidental death due to a car accident caused by poor
workmanship. Please advise. By the comments I have reviewed, this is a case of
poor quality and second class workmanship of the welds/frame of the seats in
these vehicles.

I am facing another broken seat bracket on a 1999 jeep grand
cherokee. This is the second broken bracket I have had on the same seat in less
than 4 years. The last time I replaced it, the part cost $170. Now I'm told it
will cost me over $300. And that's just the cost for the part--it doesn't
include labor. This part being broken results in my vehicle being unsafe to
drive. If I were to be in an accident, I seriously doubt that my seat would
keep me safely within the seat. I hate even to think what could happen, but if

installing was $850. So we keep the back seat folded forward so the front seat,
in the 'furtherest back' position, rests against the back seat and we have wire
twisted to hold the seat in place as best as possible. We were told since it
was out of warranty, chyrsler would not fix it, even though in our mechanic's
opinion it is obviously a flaw structure of the seat and not something that

failure it is only driven to and from work (20 miles a day). Current mileage is

research, the contact found numerous complaints regarding the same failure he

Driver side seat track for 1999 power seats has broken, I
seen several reports of this happening to jeeps, for some reason they are made
of garbage, the metal track just snaps and it can not be that i8 am heavy set
as I only weigh 155 lbs. Why have a seat belt on if the seat it self is not
bolted to floor as the track is broken?

The contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. While driving
5-10 mph, the driver's side power seat has movable metal that connects and

to the actual vehicle. The dealer stated that the entire seat track would have
to be replaced at an estimated cost of $550. The failure mileage was 155,000

The driver's side seat has failed twice; the first time 2
years ago, when the bolts holding the seat the the frame broke, causing the
seat to "float in the seat railing, and again this week, where the frame
holding the seat broke. In both cases, I believe this could lead to an
significant increase in injury, should the vehicle get into an accident. When I
spoke with both the dealership & chrysler, they said as the vehicle was out
of warranty, they would do nothing about it. When I brought up the potential
danger, they wanted me to submit my bills for review, documentation they can
get from the dealership.

Description of the Complaint:
Driver's seat front outboard attach point failed during
normal use. The failure was in the frame of the seat base where it attaches to
the seat adjustment track. This is a manual adjust seat. I am original owner
and of average build. Vehicle has never been involved in a collision, abused in
any way, and has been maintained in excellent condition. I conducted my own
informal investigation. The seat base frame where it attaches to the seat track
is a light weight sheet metal stamping. The holes in the stamping that accept
the seat track attachment studs are significantly oversize compared with the
size of the stud. The seat track stud is fastened to the seat base with a bare
nut that is only slightly larger than the hole diameter. This results in the
nut bearing down on a very small surface area of the sheet metal. High stress is
created at these points, especially if the nut is not exactly centered on the
oversize hole. Also, the front attach points are several inches to the rear of
the front edge of the seat frame, further increasing forces on these points for
any rearward force on the upper seat back. Over time during normal use, this
resulted in stress cracking and subsequent fatigue failure of the sheet metal.
During a high impact event such as a rear-end collision, this could cause
sudden failure of the seat attach points, resulting in loss of control of the
vehicle, injury to the front seat occupant, and injury to anyone seated in the
rear seat behind the front seat occupant. A simple flat washer or other
reinforcement of the holes in the seat base sheet metal could prevent this mode
of failure. I recommend that any vehicle equipped with seats of this design
have the seats inspected for cracks in the sheet metal base, repaired or
replaced if necessary, and have the seat attachment points reinforced with
heavy washers.

The motors on the front seats were broken when I bought it,
and I noticed that the driver's seat seemed wobbly. Shortly after purchasing
the jeep the driver's seat brackets got worse, shifting when I got in and
recently broke through. After the bracket broke, the airbag warning light began
going off when I go around a corner or curve and the seat shifts. Began
researching and found this was a common problem with many thousands of
complaints. I've left instructions with my family to sue jeep if I die or get
seriously injured in an accident because I can't afford to buy a different car
and can't sell this jeep with a broken front seat.

Description of the Complaint:
The seat frame on the driver's seat broke, causing the seat
to wobble precariously while driving. I had it welded, but it subsequently
broke in another place. Based on internet research, I repaired that break with
a bolt and nut. Subsequently, the frame broke in another place. I attempted
another repair, with poor results. It has now broken again, in a fourth place.
The seat frame is made of rather thin steel, not as thick as that of a good
cooking pot. The seat has not been abused or misused in any way, and I find by
internet research that this is a common problem. My mechanic described the seat
frame as being "made from a soup can." this is a very dangerous
situation, and I hesitate to replace it with a (quite expensive) used
replacement, as I fear it will only break again.

places, it looks like it was bad welding. I found online that many people had
the same problem. I have tried to weld it back into place, but it only breaks

This vehicle did much like the previous owner's complaint's
with the driver's seat. I had pulled in to a parking space and the seat just
collapsed. I'm fortunate that I wasn't driving but trying to park. Why haven't
NHTSA entered a recall on this??? I'm trying to get the seat welded as I can't
afford to buy another seat or another vehicle. This is a very dangerous
situation that needs to be addressed. As long as I've owned cars I've never
experienced any seat just breaking apart like this one did. Someone will get
killed if this happens while driving. The frame shouldn't give way like this.

The drivers side seat brackets that hold the seat in place
have given way. The seat now rocks side to side & front to back. It needs
some serious repair. This is not something that should happen due to normal

ripped around bolts. Caused seat to fall backward as I was driving. Currently

Description of the Complaint:
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
4x4. About a year or more ago, my front driver's seat began to
"wobble"... It was only a very minuscule amount at first, but has
gradually increased in severity and is now a completely broken seat. The left
side of the driver's seat can completely be lifted up on its side and is fully
detachable. The brackets and seat mount under the seat have broken completely
and the metal is snapped. This is a very serious problem as the driver seat may
completely detach sporadically during operation. Visiting a body shop at the
beginning of 2010 I was told that replacing the seat would cost at least
$500.00 and that the most cost efficient method would be to consider a
replacement seat from the junk yard. As I began searching around for seats, I
began to notice a very strange pattern: all the jeep's with my make and model
from about 1999 to at least 2003 or 2004 had their front seats already missing
within a matter of days upon their initial arrival to the junk yard. It was
almost impossible to find a driver's seat that would fit my make and model
because others around the country were. Confronted with this irony, I began to
search online for remedies to my issue and to see if other consumers had faced
similar problems with their jeeps. I was astonished and deeply disturbed to
find their was a web page filled with comments from other consumers
experiencing the same exact issue with the driver's seat and in some cases, the
driver's seat had detached during vehicular operation (for example, while
making right turns). These comments dated back to 2007 and majority of them, if
not all, dealt with jeep grand cherokee laredos from the year 2000. This is a
major problem and there is a proven track record of this seat defect. The
number of cases is too large to be irony. Please advocate for a recall on
behalf of consumers who are facing this.

Description of the Complaint:
The contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo.
The contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the driver seat fractured.
The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and the mechanic referred the contact
to the dealer. He then called the dealer and was advised that the driver seat
would need replacing. The manufacturer was not contacted to report the failure.
The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000 and
the current mileage was 85,000.

Description of the Complaint:
Seat brackets under driver seat have broken, which causes
seat to move when going around bends, getting in and out of seat. The way the
bracket has broken, the seat can physically be lifted up off the floor. We
removed the seat, there is only 1 of the 4 brackets not broken, so if the last
one would break the seat could tip over or fall backwards or forwards. If you
would go around a bend, you would either hit up against the door or against the
console depending on which direction you turn. If you would have to slam on the
brakes the seat would fly forward into the steering wheel. We have fixed the
seat once by rewelding the brackets, and they broke again, so we now have
completely replaced the seat with a seat from a different jeep. After the
initial repair, it took about a year for it to break again.

sitting in the vehicle when he heard a noise in the drivers seat. When he
started driving, the seat began wobbling out of control. When he inspected it,
he noticed two cracks in the seat frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The
contact called the dealer and was told that they had to repair the entire

Description of the Complaint:
Drivers seat apparently cracks, starts squeaking, wobbles
and then breaks. I have taken it to be welded three times now and each time it
lasts from a couple of months to a couple of years before the problem occurs
again. It has now broken for the forth time. Electric seat motor also fails to
lift the seat under its own power without helping by pulling the seat forward
while selecting the seat forward position on the seat motor control.

Description of the Complaint:
Without any prior signs, the frame on the underside of the
front seat my 2000 jeep grand cherokee broke. It appears that the metal near
the bolt was weak and simply snapped. After searching online, it appears that
this is a common problem. Fortunately I haven't had the problem with the seat
turning into a rocking chair yet but I fear that it is inevitable. This vehicle
has less than 50,000 miles on it and has never been used for anything more than
normal everyday driving. I find it disgusting that the manufacturer has not
done a recall on an issue that ranges for a number of model years and is
instead forcing us to pay to make our cars minimally safe. When you purchase a
car, you don't expect the metal in it to just break!

The tabs that hold my driver's side seat to the track
assembly on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
have completely broken. The dealership quoted $500+ to fix their faulty
product. The incident happened while merging onto I-75 near atlanta
and I wound up laying in my back seat. I know that I am not alone in this issue
as I have checked several forums and junk-yards all of whom report the it as a
common occurrence. Chrysler's chosen viewpoint of not fixing a severe safety
concern is unacceptable.

About six months ago, I heard a snap and felt the right side
of my driver's seat in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
become loose and wobble. Today, 10/17/ 2010, as I exited my jeep I heard
another snap and discovered that the bolts connecting my seat to the vehicle
had broken. The seat is completely disconnected from the vehicle. I weigh 185
lbs and have been the owner of the vehicle since august 2004. The safety issue
has not yet been repaired. If there were an accident, it is possible that I
along with the seat could be ejected from the vehicle.

A few months ago I noticed the drivers seat of my 2000 grand
cherokee began to make popping noises when I would turn corners or accelerate.
Just the other day when I accelerated from a stop, there was a loud pop and my
drivers seat turned into a rocking chair. It tipped all the way back to the
back seat nearly causing me to loose control and crash into the car in front of
me. I took my jeep into the dealership and they quoted me a price of more than
a thousand dollars to replace the seat bracket. I then did some research on the
internet and found that there are hundreds of others that have the same
problem. There is definitely a safety problem and why is there not a recall?
does it take people being killed to get something done? I can not afford to put
over a thousand dollars into my jeep at this time and others have had the seats
welded but the welds do not hold.

Description of the Complaint:
The driver's side front seat has a rail on the top left side
where the bolt will break through the rail causing the driver to loose control
of the vehicle, injure themselves and others in and out of the vehicle. I have
only experienced the squeaky sounds that happen just before the break. I did a
search for complaints on several websites and found at least 1500 complaints on
the this subject, per website. Why are we waiting for a death or injury for the
dealer to fix this problem?? this problem has the potential to do so!! from the
investigating I have done no one could have caused the problem but the
manufacturer itself. The solution to this problem is to replace the defective
rail. I will not do this at my own cost. I would encourage others to complain
here and chrysler corporate.

I think it is ridiculous that a drivers seat can completely
break from everyday use . My seat ( and hundreds, maybe thousands of others
that I've seen on-line) just decided to break one day . Welds - welds- I'm a
welder and I do not understand how a car - 2000 jeep grand cherokee - can be
put on the market and a total failure of a drivers seat can occur . It is just
inexcusable and I cant believe there was never a recall for this . I wonder how
many people have been killed from this defect . I'm sure there have been many
and many others severely injured because of this horrible failure . I seriously
don't know of any other vehicle that this happens to . I've owned many cars and
have many friends and relatives who have owned cars and not one has ever had a
seat where the welds completely snapped off - just broke at all the welds -
like the 2000 grand cherokee . You want proof ? go online and google search
this topic and you will see hundreds of similar complaints . I was not able to
re-weld this seat because the damage was so severe . I had to replace the
entire seat new .... Because no junk yards or online services ( e-bay ) have
any used ones available because the problem is so widespread . This is a very
serious and potentially dangerous- very dangerous defect and I feel there
should be a recall on this particular vehicle . I really can't believe there
hasn't been one . I'm sure if you stress - tested this vehicle you would have
found the defect in the first place . I'm only 185 pounds so my weight could
not have caused complete breakage . I just got in the vehicle one day and the
whole seat just snapped right off the frame ! how was this not discovered by
jeep during testing ? I believe it was and was just overlooked because it was
already in production and would have been to costly . Bottom line is this is a
very dangerous vehicle because of this seat defect thank you

left front driver's side seat rail detached from the floor rail. The steel was
weak and the bolt holding it down appears to have "ripped" right
through the steel rail. Now the front left corner of the seat moves up and down
about six inches. This is, hopefully, a one-time failure, but very dangerous. I
haven't found a replacement yet. Thousands of people have complained about this
problem. There should be a recall.

2000 jeep grand cherokee broken drivers seat. Frame for seat
has failed in three places. I am 5'10" at 180 lbs and of average build. I
am the second owner and have owned the jeep since 2004. I have taken good care
of this jeep and provided regular maintenance since I purchased it. The seat
frame connecting to the floor failed causing the seat to become unstable. I
repaired the bracket with welding. A second failure occurred between the frame
weld to the upright seat support causing the seat to recline uncontrollably.
This failure occurred during operation and nearly caused an accident. The
should be recalled and fixed before someone is seriously injured.

The driver's seat on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee started
squeaking a few weeks ago, and the other day the entire seat bracket broke
while I was going around a corner at speed (within the speed limit). When the
seat bracket broke, the entire seat (with me in it) abruptly leaned to the side
and I momentarily lost control of the vehicle and dented the side of the car on
a guardrail. I have contacted a jeep dealer, and I am told this is a very
common problem and the seat repair is close to $1000!! furthermore, they do not
have the parts in stock and I am required to pay for the parts in advance for
them to order them. This is ridiculous - the failure is a serious safety
hazard, it has happened to thousands of other jeep grand cherokee owners, and
I'm sure it has resulted in accidents and, possibly, loss of life. What can you
do to help start the process of getting a safety recall issued?

Description of the Complaint:
The drivers seat mounts broke and the seat bracket is
cracked. Also the back reclining will not adjust. I have to push it forward manually
while pushing electronic button at the same time. I have to keep wood behind
seat to support it, but it still rocks side to side. Every time I drive I risk
falling back it's scary but too expensive to fix and even with the$1500 price
tag there's waiting lists for parts. This is a real safety issue, I have read
over 1000 complaints on the same issue just today.

- driver's side seat has broken in 4 places...2 bolts in front have worn
through the track and 2 rear brackets have simply snapped. The seat is now
completely loose. The incident appears to have happened over time without my
knowledge, but I recently felt a snap and my entire seat was displaced...While
driving in traffic on a state highway. This is poor engineering, poor
craftsmanship, and entirely unsafe.

Owned this jeep since I purchased it new back in 2000. A few
months ago while I was driving, I leaned my body towards the drives side mirror
to look at it closely and suddenly the rail on my seat snapped! my initial
reaction was to catch my fall but unfortunately the only thing I was hanging
onto was my steering wheel. Bad mistake, but it was more of a sudden reaction
than an educated decision. I swerved with my foot on the brake not knowing what
had happened. Thankfully, it occurred at night and nobody was using any of the
lanes next to me on the 4 lane highway. After I pulled over to inspect what had
occurred, I was shocked to see I had snapped the seat rail completely! weighing
in at 170lbs, I don't consider myself to be overweight either. After looking
around for a new seat rail, I discovered that there are many complaints with
the same year vehicle. Defiantly should be a recall with the amount of the
same, dangerous problem...

This is a complaint regarding my 2000 jeep grand cherokee
limited. My husband noticed a wobble in the front drivers seat and within 2
days (before he could take it in) the seat became unattached just as he was
driving up a steep and curvy hill. He is around 270 pounds, well below the 400
pound limit. Luckily he was going very slow as it is a steep hill through the
neighborhood. He landed in the lap of my 6-year old daughter, crushing her legs
against her booster seat, which cause extensive bruising. While she was not
seriously or permanently hurt - this could have been much worse or fatal if it
happened under different circumstances. I have spoken with the dealer and they
said it has not been recalled. I then looked online and was astounded by the
number of other people who have had similar problems. This needs to be
addressed with chrysler before more people get injured or fatalities occur.

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
and purchased it used 4 years ago. A year ago my driver's side seat began
squeaking and slowly rocking back and forth. One day as I was driving 70mph on
the highway, the seat simply snapped, sending me reclining into the backseat
area. Luckily I was unharmed and no accident occurred. After reviewing the
structure under the seat, I discovered that the metal frame had simply cracked.
At $1000 to repair as quoted by a dealer, I simply cannot afford to do so and I
have constructed a homemade device of 2x4's that has sufficed for the time
being. However, the seat continues to rock side to side and when I go around
corners I have to lean heavily against the driver's side door. Simply put, the
seat is a danger to the driver of jeeps and every car on the roads around them.
I love my jeep but if I had been injured or killed, they would have been
completely culpable due to their failed product.

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
6 point adjustable power driver's seat. The brackets on the left side of the
power seat adjuster (the brackets that hold the top of the adjuster to the
bottom) broke on july 3, 2009
under normal breaking at a traffic light. Basically the left side of the seat
now just floats around. If the corresponding brackets on the right side go, the
seat will be free of the vehicle and I'll be driving from the back. I was
willing to write this off as a one off problem, but that's just not the case.
This is such a common issue that I'm unable to find a replacement from a salvage
yard. The dealer wants $800 to replace the assembly (the entire assembly must
be replaced as it's not available in its individual components) which just is
not possible at this point. This is a serious safety issue. If the seat were to
completely break away at 75 mph (interstate speed where I am), imagine the
catastrophic event that would occur. I've gotten a hold of a used 10 point
adjustable driver's seat from a 2001 jeep grand cherokee and am hoping I can
make it work, but at this point, the issue is not resolved. If the one from the
2001 jeep can't be made to work, I may be forced to convert it to a manual seat
as the brackets for a manual seat are affordable new.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo
and I am having issues with the drivers side seat. It has broken and I have
fixed it and broken again. I took it to my repair shop for welding an when they
took it out they found it was only being held together by fabric. I understand
that vehicle parts have a lifespan and some require that they be replaced . The
frame of the drivers seat should not be one of them. I'm looking at a
$400-500.00 repair that I should not be responsible for. This is a serious
safety issue that should have been resolved through a recall. The price for the
replacement frame is over $300.00, not counting labor. I have looked at
complaints online and this issue seems to be very common. You can't even find
replacement seats at salvage yards. The big three have been underegineering
vehicle parts for years for the purpose of future parts and vehicle sales. This
approach is a major reason they are in the mess that they are in. The
government, instead of throwing more billions at them needs to hold them
accountable, especially in an instance like this where me and my families
safety has been compromised.

Description of the Complaint:
My driver's seat on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has broke.
The metal track underneath has sheared off in several spots and the hinge to
recline the seat also has began tearing. The broken metal makes it possible for
the seat on my jeep to slide from side to side and to also slide forward and
back. The broken metal on the hinge also digs into my side and I have to cover
it with a leather glove to keep it from drawing blood. More importantly though
is the fact that the seat moves and is not safe when driving, even if just driving
on a city street, because it is not secure and you never know when it is going
to give out and shift, causing you to stop paying attention to the road so that
you can try to fix the problems with you seat. I really think that this should
be repaired as I have seen many people having similar problems. In fact, in
order to keep the seat from sliding back into the rear seat, I have installed
my own safety features - I have place a cooler in the rear seat and the head of
a sledgehammer underneath the seat to support the seat and to keep it from
sliding back any further. I find this to work well as far as keeping my seat
from moving, however it should not come to this.

my back making a left turn when the element of the seat gave way, and it left

The left side of the driver's seat became disengaged from
the floor mount because a 2 1/2 " section of the metal seat frame
including the mounting bolt fractured and broke away from the frame so that the
2 1/2" section and the bolt are still attached to the floor mount, but the
seat is not. I requested that the manufacturer replace or repair as a safety

seat has never been subjected to unusual stress or weight. I am the only driver
and weigh ~180 lbs. The car has never been in an accident that would have put
additional force against the seat. The seat just stuck one day so you could not
move the seat forward or back, and the seat began to squeak which apparently
was due to the frame containing the mounting bolt breaking.

I have a jeep grand cherokee 2000. About the end of 2001 the

replaced it no charge. They were unsure why it happened. Now, the week of 11-15-03 the front seat rail broke
again in the same place. I drive long distances and put a lot of miles on a
vehicle. I went to the dealer and was told it would cost $378. Plus tax to have
repaired. I also talked to a chrysler rep about the problem but was told that
their seats were made for average size people ( I am 275 lbs) and they would not
guarantee the new unit would not also break. I asked what was suppose to be
average size and got no answer but that her husband was my size and she
considered 275 to be average but that is not what is considered average by her
company. When the first unit broke I was only 240. I told her this seem to be a
safety issue due to the unit breaking under normal driving conditions and I
asked what would happen if I had a rear end collision, is the energy from the
crash going to send me flying through the back window because the seat rail
isn't strong enough to keep from breaking? her answer was that their seats were
made to nation safety standards. I find this problem unnerving that the rail
just breaks without any undue stress and I am being blamed for the problem for
my size. I have never heard of such a thing and wonder what is the weight
standards for people to have safety in an automotive seat? please help.

While traveling into a curve at approximately 35 mph, the
seat frame broke underneath and made it easy for the seat to suddenly rock
freely with a left-leaning to front and right-leaning to back motion, making
the vehicle almost impossible to drive now. Howard-wilson chrysler-plymouth-jeep
in jackson, ms (where I've been
having most of the service work performed on the jeep) was contacted about
possible recall information, but I was advised that I'd be required to pay for
the repair myself. I have not contacted the manufacturer or the dealership
where the vehicle was originally purchased yet, but an estimate for the repair
of this item was in excess of $400.00. I recently removed the seat from the
vehicle at a local shop and tried to have the seat framed welded back together
(because it's a clean separation of the metal on the front driver's side corner
of the seat above where it attaches to the track), but the shop strongly
advised against it for the likelihood of weaking the metal in that area and
leaving the potential of it happening again, but even they had no idea how this
particular breakage could have happened in the first place.

a serious safety defect, and there should be a mandatory recall. I have hit
several websites recently and found literally hundreds of complaints on this

I wish to file this complaint about the driver's seat. Started out with an
annoying squeak and some popping on entrance, exit, acceleration, and braking

attempted to get this welded and was told it was too involved, I tried

part was on a backorder. To date I have not been able to find the replacement

find out that this has happened to a lot of jeeps and they used cheap metal to
save money. I will be the first to say I love jeep but this is dangerous for
anybody riding in one. I only hope they do not use this method in newer models.

corners of the seat frame. A crack at all 4 corners will allow the seat, and
the driver, to fall back too far to reach the steering wheel and brakes. This

I own a 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo,
and the driver's seat mount has broken, allowing the seat to be connected to
the floorboard by only 2 corners. The events leading up to the failure include
a noise coming from the seat while seated in it, especially with weight shifts
during turns. The seat is now not supported on the front left corner nor the
back right corner. To attempt to correct the failure, I had a friend try to
glue a plate on the front left corner to help stabilize it against the
floorboard mount, but the same was not done to the back right corner due to the
placement of it. I have done research online into the cost to fix this issue,
and it seems it will cost $600-$1000 to replace the seat and it's mount. The
seat now tilts into the middle, and the pressure of the seat on the seat belt
receiver has now destroyed the center console also. It is also apparent that
thousands of other jeep grand cherokee owners have had the same issue. This is
not a "normal" repair that a consumer should have to face.
Jeep/chrysler refused to do anything.

failed, with the metal support track cracking and then breaking, leaving the
seat nearly free. The seat had been loose for several months, since the time I
purchased the vehicle in february of 2009. I had returned it to the dealer due
to noise in the seat frame, and was told it was "natural wear and
tear" and would not be repaired. I have since had the track welded to
repair and reinforce the metal, but it does need a new track for any permanent
repair, which chrysler estimates at $1,500. If I had been involved in an
accident when this seat was wobbling, I believe it would have failed completely
and would not have restrained me in the vehicle. This is a very dangerous
safety issue, if not addressed by chrysler/jeep, who has been aware of this for
many years in the grand cherokee, based on the number of online complaints I
have seen in recent days. My mechanic also told me it was clear the seat track
that is now in the vehicle was not original, and was a replacement part of the
original, which also must have failed.

The driver's seat frame failed. Prior to investigating why
the seat back wobbled and did not offer support while driving. I contacted the
local jeep dealer where the unit was purchased. They told me I needed a new
seat frame assembly. I asked if there were any complaints or recalls, they
replied with "none". The vehicle is primarily driven by my wife and
has only 45,000 miles and change on it. The dealer told me the cost of the seat
frame assembly would be about $1200 not including labor to remove the covering
and replace the frame. Etc. The dealer offered no financial assistance saying
that the vehicle was out of warranty. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop
and they stripped off the covering revealing a cracked bottom seat frame. They
ordered a jeep bottom seat frame at a cost of $363.75 and charged me labor of
$281.00 to strip off the covering, install the seat and recover accordingly.
Also, to compound the aforementioned neither the driver's side or passenger side
height adjustments function. This is not a result of the seat frame as stated
above. Is there any assistance you can render in terms of reimbursement? I can
provide photos of the failed seat frame assembly as well as copies of the
monies paid to take care of the repair. Ii have researched this problem
extensively on the internet and there are volumes of similar complaints. A
serious residual of this seat frame failure has resulted in the seat totally
collapsing to the rear with a sudden stop or impact leaving the driver in a
dangerous reclining position. It's unfortunate that perhaps not enough people
who have experienced this problem may not have taken the time to report it to
the proper agencies or authorities. Please help before someone is hurt or killed.

There are two problems with this model of jeep grand
cherokee laredo. 1) the tail light
socket in this model of jeeps constantly burns out. I have replaced this socket
numerous times at $8.00 - $10.00 each and have kept all of the burned out
sockets as evidence. When the socket burns out, the tail lights stop working
once you turn the headlights on. My vehicle has automatic headlights and this
truly causes a big problem. I've visited a jeep / chrysler junk yard in my area
and checked each tail light socket. Each socket is burned out like each of the
sockets that I have in my possession. 2) the outside rail that connects the
drivers seat to the risers breaks, converting the drivers seat to a rocking
chair. I have spoken with the service and parts departments all of the jeep
dealers in a 100 mile radius of zip code (20744) and was told that these issues
are a common problem with jeeps from 1994 to 2004. I have also spoken with
several friends as well as common strangers who I see with this same model jeep
and have learned that they also have this problem and the below problems. I
believe that this problems are a safety issue and warrant a safety recall. I

I can understand having to change a light bulb every year or two but not the

construction. I am the primary driver and am 6'2" and approximately 200

While driving, I stepped on my brake, I heard a loud
"bang" and found myself first jammed into the steering wheel/dash
area, and then, once my vehicle was stopped, I was in the rear seat area. Upon
further investigation, I found that the rear seat brackets on my front
(drivers) seat were broken through; the metal that the seat bracket is made of
was broken at both rear corners, and the front bolts were pulled-through. The
thin metal the bracket is made of had a couple of cracks, and overall, the seat
is almost useless when it comes to driving the car in a safe manner.
Fortunately, when my seat broke I was not going so fast as to not be involved
in an accident! if I had been on the freeway, I believe I would not be here
today writing this complaint. There are no reasonable local sources to replace
the bracket;(the jeep dealers want to sell a new seat for approx. 700.00,
unless you want to pay $300.00+ for another seat from a wrecking yard, which
will also have the same thin metal bracket). I am attempting to get it welded,
but I have already been informed that this will be a temporary repair at best;
the metal the bracket is made of is far too thin to handle the weight of a
person using the seat for a long period of time, and will break again). Help!

Approximately mid january, the driver's side heated seat
cushion overheated and caught fire. Luckily turning off the switch extinguished
the fire. However it left a couple of inch long burn mark in the leather seat
cover. We had been noticing "hot spots" in the heating element, and
my wife had placed a fleece hood on the seat to sit on. This also received some
melting but saved her from any burns. Discussion with family and friends lead
to the discovery of a recall involving jeep heated seats. I contacted my local
dealership and was informed that my vehicle did not fall under the recall
guidelines. Recall was for '03 & '04 models, I have a '02. I asked if they
would cover the repairs anyway as the problem was the same, they declined. I
then contacted chrysler/jeep by phone. I received the same response from a
representative and the supervisor. When I asked about an appeals process they
said I had just been through it by talking to the supervisor. My understanding
of the '03/'04 recall is that both driver and passenger seats and seat back
heating elements would be replaced due to potential failure. I am concerned
that just fixing the "broken part" would leave the possibility of
this occurring on the other seat also. I have not replaced this as yet. We are
just not using the heated seats. I am in the process of checking on various
replacement options and prices such as factory parts, replacement with
aftermarket parts, etc. I wonder what options are available besides paying for
this repair myself?

heater was not working properly. He became aware of the recall and had the
dealer check, but was informed that his vehicle was one of the few that was not
included in the recall of seats that posed a danger of catching on fire. The
consumer stated he was led to believe, that his vehicle was not included in the
recall, because the heated seat element posed no danger of fire. Having been
led to believe the part posed no fire hazard, and that it may have just worn
out, the consumer agreed to pay the cost to replace the heated seat element.
However, when the element was replaced by the dealer, it was discovered the

We are the original owner's of our jeep grand cherokee
(2003) and the front driver's seat started wobbling from side to side, which
makes driving disorienting particular when going around curves. When taken in
to the shop we were told that the brackets attaching the seat frame have failed
and are broken and need to be welded or need a replacement seat. After
researching this issue we found that this is a common issue and replacing the
seat or re-welding the seat brackets will only result in this happening again
because brackets are made of cheap metal. I am very fearful that the seat will
cause an accident (due to the disoriented it causes when driving) or that an

We are the original owner's of our jeep grand cherokee
(2003) and the front driver's seat started wobbling from side to side, which
makes driving disorienting particular when going around curves. When taken in
to the shop we were told that the brackets attaching the seat frame have failed
and are broken and need to be welded or need a replacement seat. After researching
this issue we found that this is a common issue and replacing the seat or
re-welding the seat brackets will only result in this happening again because
brackets are made of cheap metal. I am very fearful that the seat will cause an
accident (due to the disoriented it causes when driving) or that an injury will
occur because the seat will completely detach in which case the seat belt is
basically worthless in preventing injury during an accident. Given the number

a recliner. We have attempted to get this repaired both through our local
dealer and through chrysler corporation and they claim that they cannot secure
the part; we were first told by the dealer we had to prepay for the part, did
so, and then they reported back weeks later that they couldn't find the part.
Unfortunately, our financial situation does not allow us to simply park the

I own a 2004 jeep grand cherokee with a drivers side power
seat. It has approximately 105,000 miles on it. The front right seat bracket

causing the seat to rock while driving, accelerating or braking. The left side
bracket is now also cracked but not broken all the way across yet. This is a
very dangerous situation as it may both lead to an accident and cause
additional injuries to the driver. I am now trying to find used parts for the
replacement and have learned from one local used auto parts dealer
(631-654-5172) that he didn't have any because this was a :"hot"
item. My research on the internet has also found it to be a very common problem
with grand cherokees. The seats are breaking with normal use. I have decided to
complain to the NHTSA and my us senator in the interest of protecting others

I have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee that has the heated seat
issue, recall j14 and called the dealership 3 weeks ago without a response.
They set up an appointment for me to go in jan. 7th to get it fixed and when I
went in they never even had the parts to fix it. So they got my information and
said they would call me with an eta and it has been over a week now without any
contact from them. When I called today I gave them my information again and
they told me only 300 parts were being shipped to the whole state on monday and
that I may or may not get it done even after that. To me, having heated seats
that may explode and cause fires is a pretty big safety issue that should not
take over a month (when all said and done) to fix especially living in a cold
state like colorado where these seats are needed. By scheduling an appointment
to fix it, then not having the parts to do it, then never calling me back to
set up a new time that is completely unacceptable and well outside of a
reasonable time for something as serious as this.

Driver's side seat track suffered material fatigue fracture.
Seat frame is a stamped metal frame. The crack happened on the front left leg
that attaches the seat to the floorboard. The seat track is stamped by a
chrysler directed supplier and shipped to jci for assembly. Suggest chrysler to
investigate seat movement (causing fatigue in the bend), material thickness and
the possibility of adding a gusset (or brace) across the bottom of this bend in
the track. This happened on my personal vehicle. I noticed some movement in the
seat but I thought it was coming from the recline function. I was backing down
a hill when it snapped causing me (the driver) to suddenly tilt backward. I was
startled and the truck bumped into the mailbox at the end of the driveway
causing a damaged bumper.

I have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee and my drivers seat
started leaning about a year ago then this year is started squeaking when I sat
in it, but never thought anything of it since I have 120,000 miles. Then all of
a sudden as I am driving at 65 mph the seat makes a loud pop noise and I almost
wound up in the back seat. I stopped the car and looked under the seat to find
the frame cracked. I got home took the seat apart and found it had cracked on
all the weld joints and where the bolts where that help it to the metal frame.
I searched online only to find out that this is a very common problem and 100's
of people are having the same issue. This is very dangerous and could cause a
tragic accident. I had the seat welded by a friend since you cannot buy the
parts to repair. After 3 weeks now my steel frame on the seat has cracked.
These seats are death tramps and chrysler should have to fix them. Very
dangerous, do people have to die in order for this to be rectified?

The headrests in my 2004 jeep grand cherokee overland do not
provide protection from whiplash. As I sit in the seat, the headrest is at
least 8-12 inches from my head. If I were hit from behind, my neck would break
before my head would come into contact with the head rest. This is contrary to
the 2005 and newer jeeps in which the headrest is directly behind the head
(about and inch or two). The headrests should be modified to provide protection
from whiplash.

problem with grand cherokees. There is a steel tube that goes from side to side
that is entirely too thin and it shears off at the bracket. It was not involved
in any accident, it just breaks from normal use, which for a seat bracket,
should not happen. I fixed it once last summer and now another part is broken.
The seat is now basically a rocking chair and if I were to get in a crash,
